Riding Sanibel
more than 26 miles of separated path, Lighthouse Beach Park to the Blind Pass Bridge. It is the best way to see the island and the only way to see some of it.
Before you bring your own e-bike, read the city's page
Sanibel restricts which e-bikes may use the Shared Use Path, and the restriction catches people out — it is not what applies elsewhere in Florida, and a bike that is fine at home may not be legal here.
We are not going to paraphrase it. The rule belongs to the city, the city maintains its own page, and a second-hand copy on a site like this one is exactly the thing that goes quietly out of date on the subject where being wrong costs you.
Renting on the island
Which sidesteps the question entirely: a shop on Sanibel rents what is legal on Sanibel.

All five were confirmed trading by opening their own sites — the first three on 23 August 2026, the last two on 24 August — and that is all that was confirmed. Nobody here has rented from any of them, none of them is paid to be listed, and we take nothing if you book. A fourth shop that appears on aggregator lists is absent because its domain no longer resolves.

Carry two. The path is swept but it runs through shell and sabal palm, and a puncture four miles from the car on a loaded e-bike is a long walk. We have bought these twice, which tells you what you need to know.

The tube is no use without the means to fit it. Small enough to live in a pannier permanently and be forgotten until the day it saves the afternoon.

Smart cycling helmet
Florida requires a helmet under sixteen and it is a good idea at any age on a shared path with pedestrians, dogs and people stopping dead to photograph a heron. The intercom is genuinely useful riding in a group strung out along a path, which is how a family actually rides.

Sunscreen, in a stick
A shirt covers your back and not your ears, your nose or the backs of your hands. A stick rather than a lotion because you are handling line, paddles and handlebars with those hands, and it survives a hot car in a way a bottle does not.
