If your e-bike has a throttle, it is not allowed on the path
The City of Sanibel permits Class 1 e-bikes only on the Shared Use Path. Their words: Class One e-bikes "require the users to pedal for electric assistance, have a maximum assisted speed of 20 mph, and do not have a throttle."
A throttle is the tell. If yours will move without you pedalling, it is Class 2, and Class 2 and Class 3 are not permitted here. That is most inexpensive e-bikes, and it is the thing worth checking before you put one in a van and drive it over the causeway.
Riders must be 16 or older to ride an e-bike on the path. Class definitions from Florida Statute 316.003; the restriction and the quotation are the City of Sanibel's own. The age is reported by the Island Reporter, 5 May 2026, and by Billy's Bike Shop.
The three classes, and which one you have

It is usually printed on the frame, near the bottom bracket or on the down tube, and always in the manual. If you cannot find it: no throttle means Class 1, a throttle means it is not.
What else is not allowed
The city's list, quoted: "Motorized vehicles, micromobility devices, motorized scooters, mopeds, or other vehicles not exclusively operated by human power are not permitted on the Shared Use Path" — with an exception for a power-driven mobility device used by a person with a disability.
Renting instead
Which solves the problem entirely: an island shop rents you something that is already legal here.

Ask which class before you pay. We confirmed all three were trading on 23 August 2026 by opening their own sites, and that is all we confirmed — nobody here has rented from any of them, and none of them states its fleet's class publicly. A fourth shop that appears on aggregator lists is not here because its domain no longer resolves.
One thing we will not tell you: the speed limit. Secondary reporting gives a 10 to 20 mph range with a 15 mph default. The city's own page carries no path speed limit at all, and the ordinance itself is behind a service that refuses automated requests. A speed limit is exactly the kind of number a reader plans around, so it stays off this page until somebody reads it off the ordinance or photographs a trailhead sign.
Do not confuse Class 1's 20 mph maximum assist with a path speed limit. That number describes the bike, not the rule.
